Injury delays Halfpenny

LONDON (Reuters) - Wales wing Leigh Halfpenny needs treatment for a thigh injury and will not travel to South Africa with the rest of the British and Irish Lions tour party when they leave on Sunday.

"Halfpenny will return to Cardiff for treatment on the injury which has proved more significant than first thought," the management said on its official website (www.lionsrugby.com) on Wednesday.

The medical team expects treatment to take 10 to 14 days.

The Lions will call up a replacement player and Halfpenny will join the them once he is fully fit, taking the tour party back up to 37 players. The squad had been reduced to 36 when centre Tom Shanklin was ruled out with a shoulder injury.

The opening game of the 10-match tour is on May 30 and the three tests are on June 20, June 27 and July 4.
