Five Irish directors receive Chartered Director designation

Five directors have recently obtained designation as Chartered Directors, having successfully completed the Institute of Directors in Ireland (IoD) Chartered Director Programme.

Successful candidates include Bernie Gray, former Chair of Eirgrid plc; Alan Mitchell, Director, Errigal Seafood and Kilmore Seafood; Brendan Byrne, Managing Director of Worldwide Flight Services (Ireland) Ltd; Annette Flynn, Non-Executive Director, Grafton Group plc, Canada Life International Assurance and; Independent Director and entrepreneur, Peter Hughes.

Over 490 participants have undertaken the Chartered Director Programme to date, which is now in its sixth year in Ireland. Having obtained a Certificate and Diploma in Company Direction, each candidate went on to become a fully accredited Chartered Director.

Bernie Gray, former Chair of Eirgrid plc

Bernie Gray, former Chair of Eirgrid plc is currently a member of the Board of IPSO, a member of the Audit Committee of RCSI and a Partner in Better Boards, a consulting practice delivering a range of services to boards and top teams. Bernie was formerly a member of the board of the Public Appointments Service, Telecom Eireann, and former Group HR Director in Eircom. Bernie is a qualified accountant and has extensive HR and executive and consulting experience in variety of areas, largely within the public sector.

Alan Mitchell, Director, Errigal Seafood and Kilmore Seafood

Alan Mitchell joined Errigal Bay Ltd, Ireland's largest producer and exporter of shellfish products, as Financial Controller in 2007, before becoming a board director in 2010. He currently acts as Executive Group Director of Errigal Bay Ltd and its two subsidiary companies, Errigal Seafood and Kilmore Seafood. Having qualified as an accountant with Kerry Foods, Alan has a wealth of financial and commercial expertise gained in the food industry and is responsible for the financial, HR, IT and legal functions of the Errigal Bay Group. Alan is also a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland.

Brendan Byrne, Managing Director of Worldwide Flight Services (Ireland) Ltd

Brendan Byrne has extensive experience within the aviation industry, having held a number of positions with Aer Lingus between 1990 and 2003. During his time in Aer Lingus, Brendan headed up the Finance, IT, E-Commerce and Cargo functions in the airline and was responsible for introducing and the booking engine in 2001. In 2005, Brendan established the independent air cargo handling company, Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), in Ireland. Starting with a staff of seven, the company now has almost 60 employees and includes British Airways, American Airlines, Delta, US Air, Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa among its customer base with facilities at Dublin, Cork and Shannon Airports. Until recently, Brendan, a Chartered Accountant, served as a board member of ESB, holding the positions of Chairman of the Audit Risk and Finance Committees. Brendan is currently acting as an independent non-executive director of the water company, AWG Holdings Ltd.

Annette Flynn, Non-Executive Director, Grafton Group plc and Canada Life International Assurance

Annette Flynn currently acts as an Independent Non-Executive Director on the boards of Grafton Group plc and Canada Life International Assurance. Previously, Annette served on the board of UDG Healthcare plc (formerly United Drug plc) from 2004 to 2013. During this time, she held Executive Managing Director positions in businesses in Ireland, UK, continental Europe and US and managed the group strategy and technology portfolios. Annette’s early career developed with Kerry Group plc in Ireland, UK and North America. She has also served on the board of Irish Life plc and on the Public Appointments Service Interview Board. A Bachelor of Commerce graduate of University College Cork, Annette is also a Fellow Chartered and Certified Accountant.

Peter Hughes, Independent Director and Entrepreneur

Peter Hughes is an Independent Non-Executive Director of three insurance companies (Life and Non-Life) and acts as an Audit Committee Chairman, Risk Committee Chairman and Chief Risk Officer. Peter also serves as a director for various financial services companies, including life settlements, CAT bonds and other SPVs. His business interests include a recruitment firm, Principle HR, and a workforce management technology start-up, TempBuddy. With over 15 years’ experience in corporate governance and company oversight, he has acted as a director in over 50 companies covering a wide range of strategies and objectives.

Peter is a fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Certified Accountants in Ireland and previously worked with Grant Thornton, KPMG and Marsh.
