Minister Fleming holds inaugural meeting of the Joint Fintech Group

The Minister of State with special responsibility for Financial Services, Credit Unions and Insurance, Seán Fleming TD, held the inaugural meeting of the Joint Fintech Group on Wednesday, 16th of November.

The Joint Fintech Group is a priority of the 2022 Update of the Ireland for Finance strategy, which was launched in October. 

The purpose of the Group is to:

  • Provide strategic guidance on the State’s industrial strategy for digital finance from an expert industry perspective.
  • Inform the State of the sector’s skills and education requirements for the future. 
  • Act as a pre-consultation forum on policy and legislative developments related to digital finance. 
  • Act as a forum for the private and public sector to engage on key items of the European Commission’s digital finance agenda.

Minister of State at the Department of Finance Seán Fleming TD stated:

I was pleased to have organised and chaired the first meeting of the Joint Fintech Group this week. It’s incredibly important the State and industry are aligned on developing the digital finance sector in Ireland. It was a very open and productive meeting focused on key areas of opportunity for Ireland. I asked industry representatives to provide a list of priorities for the Group, which will be discussed at the next meeting.”

The Joint Fintech Group is currently made up of fourteen members with six from the public sector drawn from the cross-Government Fintech Steering Group and eight from the private sector. It will meet twice a year.

This membership of the Group composes of representatives from:

  • The Department of Finance 
  • The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment 
  • Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science
  • Skillnet
  • IDA
  • Enterprise Ireland 
  • Financial Services Ireland (Part of Ibec)
  • Banking Payments Federation of Ireland
  • Electronic Money Association Ireland
  • Sustainable Finance Ireland
  • Irish Funds
  • Insurance Ireland
  • Instech.ie
  • Technology Ireland (Part of Ibec)

The Central Bank and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission attend as observers.
